- Why do some of the banks, and supermarkets and other businesses have a sign saying we acknowledge the traditional owners of the land ……..
Is there a greater way of not acknowledging the traditional owners by not mentioning who they are (clan/nation). I mean its better then nothing I guess, but to me it appears not authentic when the same sticker appears on every bank or business within its name in Australia.
I have felt annoyed at this for a long time on behalf of my first nation friends, and last week when I went to the local Supermarket, they had an acknowledgement and actually mentioned the Yuin People as the traditional custodians!
Hopefully this is a start of a little more effort in acknowledgement.
I think that there needs to be a little further acknowledgement especially from large corporations, if we acknowledge its there “traditional” lands and it was wrongfully taken, and a large business is making lots of money operating on such lands where is the payment or offering a hand to help close the gap and acknowledge the original dispossession. For low interest loans for Local Aboriginal Organizations and start ups, that would be a bank acknowledging from the bank that’s not just to appear politically correct.
