What Is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a whole system of health care originating in Japan, and deeply rooted in Traditional Oriental Medicine Theory/Wisdom. During a Shiatsu session I utilize my hands, fingers, thumbs, forearms, elbow knees and feet to apply pressure along meridian pathways and Tsubo (Acu points), and the corresponding muscles. A session usually also uses a combination of lengthening stretches and skeletal movements/joint/limb mobilizations and rotations.

Pressure can vary depending upon the reason for treatment and desired effects. When applying pressure a Shiatsu therapist works with the clients breath, when deep pressure is needed/wanted often “a mother hand” is used when applying pressure which senses the feedback within the surrounding muscle groups this allows the treatment to remain in the comfortable pressure where greater release and manipulation of the tension can be achieved. Shiatsu works on relaxing Jitsu (tight, restricted, excess) areas of the body / meridians and Tsubo points and nurture Kyo (Weak, flaccid, deficient) to balance the Ki of the mind body and spirit. I have also practiced Aikido and other martial arts and mindfulness practices which also also influences how I apply pressure in a non forceful way.

In-depth knowledge of the ancient Japanese/Chinese medical theory/wisdom can further refine the treatments focus and can address a whole range of issues that normal massage can not, such as but not limited to;

Insomnia, Period pain, Digestive issues, mental health (Trauma, Stress, Depression, Anxiety etc) amongst many other conditions.
